Albion Online: Upcoming Outlands Update & Possible Influence

Hi, guys, I'm MichaxlT, the columnist of AOSilver, so happy to be here, I believe most of you have already seen the Albion Development Recap (May 19), knowing that some upcoming improvements will add to Outlands! What do you think about these improvements?

I'm not a "the sky is falling" kind of guy, but I do think that making Caerleon the sole portal to the Outlands will seriously damage the long-term viability of the game. The TLDR version of this post is that this change will make the game seem dead to new players, even if it isn't, because basically the entire population of the game will be concentrated in Caerleon far away from the newbie starting areas.

Albion Online: Upcoming Outlands Update & Possible Influence

Under the current set-up, most of the 5 biome cities seem active, with a full set of buildings and a decent number of players. A newbie who starts without knowing much about the game and goes to (for example) Lymhurst for the first time will find all the buildings he needs, an active auction house, and a decent number of players in the city center. This is because of the way the ports are distributed among different areas, so (for example) high black zone players likely will be going to Martlock for the AH, medium black zone to Lymhurst or Fort Sterling for AH, etc.

After the Hector change, basically all experienced players will congregate in Caerleon. Caerleon will effectively have a universal auction house, and will rapidly have the highest tier crafting buildings. By contrast, the biome cities will be deserted, and may not even have many buildings in them, since only newbies will ever use those buildings and the low taxes they pay for to refine or craft T2-T4 may not make buying plots, constructing buildings, feeding buildings, etc. economically viable.  So one of two scenarios can occur: some newbie players showing up to post-Hector Lymhurst will come to a ghost town, think to themselves "this game is dead," and lose interest. OR players need to farm more gold in game to support themselves. Of Course AOSilver can certainly provide albion gold with affordable price, but this still could be possible hidden troubles.

I understand that the BZ cities aren't working out as you'd like, but I think you can make a few changes that will make them more attractive. First, put each city near the middle of each continent (and perhaps have two cities in the large western continent, one in the middle of the east part of the continent and the other in the middle of the west). One big problem with the BZ cities now is that they're at the fringes of the continents and too difficult to get to. Second, force all buildings to be open to the public and decrease the maximum tax rate (say to 99%). This should basically ensure that BZ players will have access to crafting and prevent one guild from taking over the a city and locking out all other players. Third, expand the size of each city so that it takes up the entire map with additional plots (Sheerborough, for example, is only about half the size it could be). This will allow for more plots, more buildings, and more competition to have lower prices for crafting.

Beyond those changes, I wonder if over time more and more players will go to the BZ naturally. Obviously the hard core players go their immediately, but there likely are plenty of players like me who began post-Galahad and took a some weeks to gather resources and explore the Royal Continent before ever setting foot in the Outlands. After a few months of launch, you might find more and more players going to the Outlands.

Finally, if you need any Albion Online services, such as gold, silver, items and powerleveling, just go to https://www.aosilver.com/, you will find all you need and want here. AOSilver hopes that all players will have a happy time in game!
